Why young people are leaving Long Island

“What about us?” That’s the question young people across Long Island have every right to ask their local leaders. We are losing too many of our best and brightest because they can’t find housing they can afford. I believe we need to think creatively about where and how we build — including reimagining places like the Massapequa Mall and other underused commercial properties for housing. But most importantly, young people need a seat at the table. They need to speak up, ask hard questions, and make sure local leaders are listening. It was an honor to speak with leaders at the Left on Long Island last month. I’ll be continuing that conversation this Saturday at noon at the Islip Young Democrats Youth Town Hall at Greenwood Hall.
